Xinmao Chen, is a famous artist in Shanghai or even China's contemporary art field who then shifted mainly to ink-wash and material works, carrying forward strong Chinese humanism in various, unique and modern ways.
Chen's atelier is located in a village in the suburban area of Shanghai which was purchased several years ago as a homestead with a 30-year land-use right. According to the plan of the village, buildings are in a row from east to west, each covering 350 square metres which is 25m from south to north and 14m from east to west. Besides, the prescribed building area is 11.5m multiplied by 11m and has a limit in height of 12m. The intervals between two buildings is 3m.
Atelier is especially for artists to create paintings in large scales as well as collect and display their works. Three different functions----a small gallery, a painting workroom and a holiday resting place feature the architecture.
Square is the best option to make full use of space and maximize the architectural volume. The typical modernistic appearance of the building is in sharp contrast to other buildings. (Most buildings have nothing to do with traditional local style of architecture.)
In the interior part, the first floor is built to 5 metres high so that the artist can create large painting works. On the second floor, works are displayed. Low windows enable more display space. Two bedrooms and a storage are on second floor as well. The third floor is designed for small scale paintings. There is a balcony, a lounge, above which is a skylight.
Such a small building makes up an integration of extremely strange shapes and unduly familiar materials.
One day, a villager said frankly to the artist,' though outstanding, your house does look so ugly!'
